In 2018, NFL player Marquez Valdes-Scantling had a heartfelt idea: to donate three bookbags filled with essentials to those in need during the Christmas holiday. He shared his intention on social media, never expecting what would happen next.
The response was overwhelming. Donations poured in from friends, family, and complete strangers who wanted to help. That year, instead of just three bookbags, we were able to give out over 70 backpacks—each one packed with essential toiletries like deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, as well as food and resource information to help people take their next step forward.
As word spread, so did the generosity of our community. Each year, the number of people we were able to serve grew—reaching over 250 individuals in recent years. With each event, we saw more faces, heard more stories, and witnessed more lives touched by hope.
What began as one man’s holiday gesture has grown into Humble Beginnings, a nonprofit committed to empowering underprivileged youth and individuals experiencing homelessness. Our mission is to not only meet immediate needs but also to provide opportunities, wrap-around services, and lasting support that can transform lives.
And this is just the beginning. We are determined to expand our reach, provide more resources, and create more opportunities every single year. Because when we work together, a humble beginning can grow into something extraordinary.
